South Solihull

Poetry Reading

Status:Active, open to new members
Coordinator:
When: On Monday afternoons 14:15
3rd Monday of the month
Venue: Solihull Library

We meet to recite poetry in a quiet area of Solihull Library, so no need to project the voice.  Members choose a topic for the following month; recently we've looked at Wintertime, Humour, Love & Relationships and Nature.  Members bring different poems based on these themes to read.

As a group, we are relaxed and give ourselves some time away from everyday tensions and anxieties.  At the same time it is a lively group and some interesting discussions follow.

Over the last year, a few of the poets we have covered include Pam Ayres, Andrew Motion, Maya Angelou , Wendy Cope, Sylvia Plath, John Betjeman, Spike Milligan, Christina Rossetti, Shakespeare and Dylan Thomas, as well as poetry of musical theatre .

If you are interested in this, or just want to give it a go to see if you like it, then get in touch with the Coordinator using the link above.

Forthcoming Meetings

Monday 20th April 2026

Meeting
We are bringing 2-3 of our favourite poems and members will make a short presentation about one of the poems read.

Past Meetings

  • For February, we agreed a Laugh and some Humour would be welcome.  We shared some great poems as well as listening to presentations on some of the poets.

  • We read poems by Sylvia Plath.  She used words sparingly, yet they are full of passion and feeling.  Definitely challenging, but different people reading them through a couple of times really helped.

  • November's subject was ‘Animals ‘…. not just domestic, but also farm animals, wild and jungle, and mystical creatures such as the phoenix.  Some serious and some very amusing.

  • We had a great meeting, with lots of poems about Autumn.  It was nice to hear the classics once again, mixed with some unusual and previously unknown poetry.

  • The Poetry Reading group held its first meeting at Solihull Library.  We were given a quiet, comfortable area in which to meet.  For the first meeting, the themes of our choices were ‘Favourite Poems’, ‘Poems we just enjoyed reading' and ‘Poems with a special meaning’.
