Two ladies, in cocktail dresses, circa 1920’s, facing each other in a confrontational manner, across a small dining table. One holds a shoe in her hand.

The play, set in the 1920s, takes place in one room of Julia and Fred’s flat in London.  Julia’s best friend, Jane, comes around in a flap after their husbands leave for the weekend; both girls have received a postcard from an old flame stating his intention to visit.  What ensues is hilarious and cringe-worthy as the girls – equally terrified and excited at the prospect – drink themselves into a stupor and simultaneously a rage, and both their friendship and marriages are put to the test.

This is not a deep psychological excavation or a radical reimagining of a classic.  It is a witty and genteel comedy of manners that embraces all the sophistication and silliness of Coward’s world.  Yet within that world lies a shimmering pleasure.  The physical comedy is delightful, the dialogue sharp, and the performances full of spirit and affection.

Overall, Fallen Angels is a stylish reminder of Coward’s enduring brilliance.  It sparkles with desire, rivalry and scandal, all delivered with elegance and laughter.
