We discussed three more of the series of Gresham Lectures by Professor Robin May on why we have emotions covering Grief and Love and whether we should manipulate emotions - see https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=robin+may+emotions. We noted that Grief is a puzzling emotion that is possibly an evolutionary carryover from childhood. It can trigger profound physical symptoms with impacts on our health. The length of time we grieve varies but perhaps oddly seems to be associated with part of the brain linked to reward pathways. Romantic love is a strong emotion that is also closely aligned with the brain’s reward and motivation systems. We discussed the bonding side of love, its purpose, and the possible role of the hormone oxytocin. The more spiritual/cultural aspects of love, not covered in the lectures was raised. We briefly discussed the pros and cons and potential ethical issues of using drugs to try to stabilise/control emotions. We noted the important impact of our gut health / microbiome on our emotions. Can we control/alter our emotions just through our diet? We felt we needed to know more about recent research in this area - a possible future topic?
