After introductions and the formalities of setting up a new interest group, we started Studying Philosophy, which may be approached in many ways, and some lessons learned from existing groups were offered. Generally members study some texts and/or videos before the meeting, to be prepared to discuss and seek to share understanding of the material. It is recognised that while preparation is clearly important, some members will not have got round to it, some will find it totally perplexing, some will have been taken with it and explored further. We looked at the attached “Preparation Levels” table. Note that it is recommended that members try to achieve at least the level of understanding the question being addressed by the material. We discussed the first “Crash Course Philosophy” lecture at https://nerdfighteria.info/v/1A_CAkYt3GY/ . We noted that philosophy covers how to think - and considers ongoing unanswered questions. These cover Metaphysics - what is reality?, Epistemology - how do we know we know?, Logic - how do we develop knowledge in a valid way?, Ethics - what is good?, i.e. right behaviour and attitude?, and Aesthetics - what is beauty?
