A ‘different choice' for our group but we thought it appropriate to read a Jane Austen novel in the 250th anniversary year of her birth on December 16th, 1775.
The novel is the story of seventeen-year-old Catherine Morland, one of ten children of a country clergyman, who has a fondness for Gothic novels.
Catherine leaves her sheltered, rural home to enter the busy, sophisticated world of Bath in the late 1790s and subsequently visits Northanger Abbey.
Group Review: The average score for this novel was 7/10 with scores varying from 3/10 to 9/10. The group discussions on the novel were wide ranging and we noted that the content of Northanger Abbey is quite ‘different' book to many of Austen's other novels.
