We wanted to discuss further the Scholastics - primarily St Augustine and St Thomas Aquinas.  We had watched the relevant discussion on the BBC series “The Great Philosophers” (here), and for more detail for this meeting we listened to some “In our Times” programmes on Augustine, Aquinas - and Occam’s Razor.  We confirmed that St Augustine integrated Christianity with Platonism, and Aquinas was concerned with eliminating the conflict between religious faith and Aristotle’s reason.  We remarked how Aquinas succeeded in his project, whereas Islam eventually decided it could not accept Aristotle’s rationality, even though it was the Moorish philosophers such as Avicenna and Averroes who first rediscovered and studied Aristotle.  Aquinas argued that we were created with minds to process our sensory perceptions but that we were guided to the good by God.  We discussed the problem of identifying “the good” and whether a belief or faith in God was a guide.
