We ​​discussed Stoicism. Yes, it is the basis of today’s self help manuals with its teaching that we should be indifferent to everything that happens - what matters is that we act virtuously. There are times when it is right to be angry, but we need to be aware this will distort our thinking and think before we act. But we noted that Stoicism is not inward looking: one of the spiritual exercises for the Stoic is to seek “the view from above”,actively widening our thoughts to our family, our society, our fellow men and women and beyond. This led to a discussion of whether, given that Stoics believe in God only as immanent in all things, whether Stoicism is a religion. This in turn led to differentiation of religion - that which binds a community - from spirituality - the feeling that there is something beyond and greater than us.
