The group were generally in awe of Tara's educational achievements in light of her lack of formal education.  The book highlighted the amazing level of endurance and resilience of human beings, but also the detrimental power individuals can exact over others.  Additionally, the level of violence from her brother and lack of care from her family was very disturbing and for some hindered their enjoyment of the book.
