AI: Its Benefits and Threats

We discussed the benefits and risks of AI.  AI was referred to as having two meanings.  The first, being as the tool which we use in computers apps, etc.  The second as the ‘empty term’ (ie non-existent) that is used to cause dis-ease.  With the first meaning we discussed how AI was trained, that it was a statistical algorithm.  We noted that consequently it had the property of being able to produce false results - hallucinations.  We noted the widespread use of AI applications, their usefulness and irritations of in our lives.  The empty term of AI had come from worldviews related to TESCREAL (Transhumanism, Extropianism, Singularitarianism, Cosmism, Rationalism, Effective Altruism, and Long-termism).  These resulted in, amongst other things, exaggerated predictions and alarmist views.  The ethical implications were that we should be aware that AI is a tool, not a sentient being; and of the risks of hype and fear-mongering as financial strategy, real risk of algorithmic manipulation, risk of loss of human agency.  We noted that reference to the UN declaration of human rights and that: we should recall the importance of strengthening human worth; define core human essence; and that to create a hopeful future requires "positive narratives”.  To this end there was a suggestion that we embrace AI.
