We discussed Michael Levin’s Bioelectricity Levin presents experiments that show that cells and organisms respond to electric fields on their surfaces. He argues that it is this field, not the cell’s DNA, that steers the cells behaviour, particularly that the field carries the design for how the cell should develop or behave: for example he cuts off the head of a planarian worm and it can be persuaded to regrow its head. How does it do that? Levin claims it is the electrical signals from neighbouring cells. Conventional genetics and epigenetics theories hold that the master plan for an organism lies in the genome, and the appropriate genes are activated or inhibited epigenetically to form proteins that build the appropriate part of the organism. It is plausible that there are bioelectrical forces at work in addition to biochemical reactions, but if it is the electrical signals that dominate the process, this would appear to demand a Platonic 'Ideal'.
