We discussed Intelligence as part of our quest to understand AI and how clever it may get.  We watched this video by David Krakauer, professor at the Santa Fe Institute.  Some of his claims were challenging - observations of individual monkeys switching groups as a tribe progresses to a goal may be described in a model, but does that make the tribe as an entity intelligent?  Easier to accept that an ant colony has intelligence though.  These cases are described and accepted as “evolutionary intelligence”.  Do they measure up to a possible definition of intelligence as “the application of faculties to find or improve a solution to a problem”?  Also strange was the demonstration that the community of Rubik’s Cube solvers is readily and predictably improving solution time for ever more complex cubes  Is that intelligence or just targeted practice - and is there any difference?  We also discussed how our human societies seem capable of failing in evolutionary intelligence - not facing up to climate change or the need to pay taxes to pay for community wide benefits.
